Ms. Karen Rasche
This is my 20th year working with Godwin Heights Public Schools. I am excited to be returning to the high school this year to help students experience success in their academic classes. For the 2018-2019 school year I will be supporting students in online and team taught classes. I look forward to helping prepare your student for graduation, helping them learn to be a self-advocate.
I have a very diverse background in education. This profession started when I was serving in the United States Air Force. I was assigned as a technician in the 552nd CRS (Component Repair Squadron) providing support service for the E-3 AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System) Aircraft for three years. As a Staff Sergeant, I was approached to become one of the training instructors for this aircraft. In training military personnel, I discovered my love for teaching.
After serving eight years active duty for the Air Force I left the military to pursue a degree in teaching. I began my education at Rose State College in Oklahoma City. After the the devastating bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in 1995, I chose to move closer to my family in Florida.
I completed my Associates Degree at Tallahassee Community College. Transferring to Florida State University (go noles!) in 1996, I entered the Special Education Program. My Masters Degree in EI (Emotional Impairment), LD (Learning Disability) and VE (Varying Exceptionalities) was awarded in the summer of 1998.
Teaching is my passion! I began my "civilian" teaching career at the Florida Department of Corrections. At this female prison, I worked with inmates working to get their GED. Within the prison education system there are students with special needs. Although at this time they were not identified as "special needs", students were classified according to test scores. My classroom was a pre-GED room, providing the foundation skills necessary for entry to the GED classroom.
Godwin Heights has offered me many ways to grow within my teaching profession. I began as a "team teacher", providing special education services within the regular education classroom in the areas of math, science and social studies for 6th-8th grade students. As need within the district changed, I began working as a resource/pullout classroom teacher, home-bound services provider, general education math teacher, and developing a new project based learning class curriculum. in 2017 I transferred to the high school to help students be successful in team taught classes, online classes and support through study skills.
